Editors, are simply video recorders that are capable of controlling the functions of another editor or player. This allows a precise section of a video to be "Marked" on the [ slave, player, dub ] machine and be cued and recorded to the [ master, recorder, editor ] machine as marked. During this process, you can dub audio from other sources. If narration is required, you can add live voice with a microphone, or previously recorded tape. Background or theme music can be inserted and edited as well. The transfer of signal is attained through the use of low noise coax cable and BNC connectors. The upper level editors transfer signal through 7 pin dub cables. These transfer the signal by keeping the Luminance and the Chroma signal separated to eliminate cross color. This feature plus the width of the tape and high transport speed permit lossless edit transfers. Generational loss is no longer a factor. In addition, the audio is transferred though separate cables to keep clarity and not create crosstalk between themselves or the video signal. And when put on the tape, are separated by an Audio Guard Band which is a blank space between the left and right audio tracks preventing crosstalk. The control cable which controls the transport functions during editing is kept separate to keep mechanical electrical noise from entering your video signal.
If this sounds to good to be true, welcome to broadcast video !!

The BVU 800 was the first front-loading editing deck. It was also the first in a long line of 800 series BVU machines. These machines have the RS-422 9-pin connectors and the 7-pin dub connectors. See the cables page for what these connectors look like as well as what they do. The BVU-800 is a very solid editing deck which consistently produces great results.
The BVU 950 was the last U-matic editing deck ever produced by Sony. It features the RS-422 controlling cables that are found on all BVU editors. This allows the machines to be connected together so tape can edited from several machines by the controls on the BVU-950. The BVU-950 also includes the SP recording format for superior recording quality.
